Host to London’s most vibrant food vendors, Borough Market is a city in itself. Amongst the crowds of people who flock for freshly baked donuts from Bread Ahead or to eat homemade pasta from Padella, Gujurati Rasoi is worth a visit for those who love spicy vegetarian and vegan food.
Owned by Urvesh and his mother Lalita, Gujarati Rasoi was established in 2005, firstly at Broadway Market before extending to the lucky consumers of Borough. Their premise-of cooking cuisine through the generations- is what makes their food delicious, with the aroma of spices luring you in and curries bubbling away in front of you.
On the menu that particular sunny day was Cauliflower and Pea Curry and Mung Bean Dal. As I sat facing the throng of people, I was instantly hit by the spicy cauliflower, with each mouthful leaving a hint of ginger and an explosion of earthy peas in my mouth. Thankfully, there was a dollop of yoghurt not too far away.

The dal, on the other hand, was creamy, light and- eaten with the cauliflower- cemented itself as a firm favourite. The chopped coriander sprinkled on top- although not enough to satisfy my herb obsession- gave the food some freshness against the starchy lentils and rice. More heat from the sliced green chilli was a reminder of the authenticity of spice, and in turn, the originality of Gujurati Rasoi.
Other choices on their delivery menu include fresh, whole Okra, Spinach and Paneer and Vegetable Koftas. All the food is very reasonably priced, with my large takeaway pot being around £8.50 (and still in budget for a glass of wine!)
Full and satisfied and looking out at the hundreds of people rushing through the market, my friend and I admired the fresh fruit and vegetable stalls glinting from afar and the animated couples laughing over a £35 bottle of wine.
Mouths enjoyably burning, we thought that next time, we’d treat ourselves to one of those.
